A pass to travel around the continent without spending a euro. From 30 October 2025, at 12pm, the new edition of DiscoverEu opens, the European Union program which offers eighteen-year-olds the opportunity to travel for free by train for a period of between one and thirty days.
There are 40,000 passes up for grabs, of which 4,888 are reserved for young Italians. The initiative, twin of Interrail, is not just a travel opportunity but a way to encourage youth mobility, knowledge between cultures and the discovery of European heritage.
Who can participate and what are the requirements
To obtain the pass you must be 18 years old or turn 18 by 31 December 2025. Citizens of European Union countries, but also of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Serbia, North Macedonia and Turkey are eligible. However, those who have already participated in previous editions are excluded, to give space to new travellers.
Each participant can travel alone or with a group of up to five people. In this case, the group leader will fill out the application and take the quiz, while the others will receive a code to complete registration. Everyone, of course, will have to meet the age and residency requirements.
How to apply and pass the quiz
The procedure is simple: from the official DiscoverEu website you will have to click on “Participate” and enter your personal data, citizenship and a valid identity document. Then comes the moment of the most awaited test: a multiple choice quiz with five questions on the European Union, plus a tie-breaking question in which you will have to make an estimate. Only those who answer all the questions correctly and are closest to the result of the final question will get the pass. Winners will be announced on January 7, 2026.
Travel for free, but not only that
The DiscoverEu pass also includes a discount card for museums, cultural events, local transport and affiliated accommodation. You only travel in second class, but the experience will be unforgettable: a month to cross borders, discover new cities and feel like citizens of Europe, one ticket at a time, returning home enriched and with a baggage full of emotions.
