By the end of 2025, those traveling from Italian airports will finally be able to say goodbye to expensively paid water in shops. In fact, in 22 airports associated with Assaeroporti, it will be possible to fill water bottles and bottles free of charge after security checks. An innovation that involves the main hubs of the country, from Malpensa and Linate to Naples, Bologna, Cagliari, Turin, Olbia and Alghero, where the service has already been active for some time.
The initiative, created on the initiative of Assaeroporti, aims at a dual objective: improving the traveler experience and concretely reducing the use of single-use plastic. A response to the many protests over the exorbitant prices of water and food at airports, often much higher than what is normally requested.
Growing refill points: new airports and access methods
The refill pioneers have been joined by other ports such as Bergamo, Palermo and Cuneo, already operational, while Catania, Pisa, Florence, Trieste, Trapani, Pescara, Rimini, Comiso and Salerno will complete the list by the end of the year. Genoa and Grosseto have also joined the initiative, offering drinking water at no cost to travellers, albeit in different ways depending on the facilities.
The service is only available airside, i.e. after security checks, and allows passengers to refill their reusable bottles with certified drinking water. A measure as simple as it is effective, which is part of an ecological transition path already undertaken by many Italian airports.
Sustainable travel is possible
With the new refill points, Italian airports are moving closer to European standards in terms of sustainability and traveler services. According to Assaeroporti, this is a concrete step towards “people-friendly” airports, where comfort and respect for the environment can finally coexist. A small revolution that starts from a daily gesture: filling the water bottle.
