From the terrible accident to the goal against Inter after 292 days: the rebirth of Filippo Serantoni (after brain surgery)

There are stories that in youth football, and above all in life, surpass any result. That of Filippo Serantoni, a talent born in 2010 for Inter U15, is one of these. 25 goals scored last season, pure striker, his future in the major football leagues seems written after winning the scudetto. Then, however, everything suddenly changes, calling into question not only his career, but the boy’s very daily life.

The drama of the summer: the trauma and the operation

A simple beach holiday this summer, like many others, a dive and hitting the rocks with your head. The young man loses consciousness and is rushed to hospital. The doctors found a significant sunken fracture with cerebral hemorrhage which made a very delicate neurosurgical operation on the brain necessary.

The following days are those of uncertainty, the operation is successful but opens an even more complex phase: that of unanswered questions. Will he be able to play again? Will he be able to sustain competitive pace? For a boy from 2010, used to living on the pitch and ball, the risk is that of an indefinite suspension of the dream. The path is long, made up of rehabilitation, waiting and continuous checks, while football becomes a distant horizon.

The long wait and the gradual rebirth

Serantoni’s recovery is a process made of small steps. First the hospital stay, then rehabilitation, specialist checks and the return to normality. Eventually sports fitness arrives and training with teammates also returns, initially without contact. Time is stretching until he becomes the real opponent, but here is finally his return to the pitch: 292 days have passed since his last official match with the Nerazzurri shirt. Inter accompanies him at every stage, protecting his path and allowing him to regain confidence without pressure. A management that proves decisive for a peaceful return.

Returning against Südtirol with the helmet

The moment arrives against Südtirol, but with one condition at least for the moment: wear a protective helmet. An essential accessory to protect the operated area in an image that inevitably reminds every self-respecting Inter fan of that of Cristian Chivu, forced to wear it for years after a serious head injury. Two different stories, united by the same symbol: continuing to play despite everything.

The goal of liberation

Serantoni enters in the 59th minute, observes the pitch, regains rhythm and confidence. But a few minutes are enough to see the player from before again: deep attacks, finishing movements, a near post in a semi-overhead that anticipates what is about to happen. Then in the 75th minute comes the moment that closes the circle: the ball in the net, a real emotional liberation.

Celebration is a must, for him and for all his teammates, but the goal is worth much more: it is the symbol of a return to sporting life after months of fear, doubts and silent work. Now the future is open again. But compared to before, there is something more: the awareness of having overcome the most difficult moment. And to be able to start again, step by step towards a future that who knows where it will take him. He promises it himself on social media: “I’ll get everything I’m owed” and seeing from the hunger for redemption he has, we can be sure of it.
