From the terrible injury to the first gold at the Paralympics: the rebirth of the Italian snowboarder Emanuel Perathoner

There are victories that go beyond sporting results. The gold medal won yesterday by Emanuel Perathoner in the Paralympic snowboard cross at the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Paralympics belongs to this category. It is not only the first gold for Italy in the event, but the arrival point of a story made of pain, obstinacy and rebirth.

On the snow of Cortina d’Ampezzo, the thirty-nine year old from South Tyrol dominated the race with authority, leaving behind the Australian Ben Tudhope, silver medalist, and the South Korean Lee Jehyuk, bronze medalist. A clear success, built curve after curve, which spoke of much more than a simple competition.

An Olympic career ended abruptly

Before becoming a Paralympic champion, Perathoner was already a big name in international snowboarding. Born in Bolzano in 1986, he represented Italy at the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi 2014 and PyeongChang 2018, competing in snowboard cross.

His goal was clear: to also participate in the Beijing 2022 Games. But in January 2021, during Olympic preparations, a serious accident completely changed the course of his career. A devastating fracture of the tibial plateau of his left knee made it impossible to continue as before.

From that moment on, a long period of uncertainty began, consisting of four surgeries, months of rehabilitation and eighteen months spent on crutches. Eventually, to regain mobility, doctors had to apply a total knee replacement.

The choice to start over

For many athletes, such an injury would have meant the end of competitive sport. Perathoner instead decided to start from scratch. With patience and determination he rebuilt his path by entering the world of Paralympic sport, where he found a second career.

The return to competition has been gradual but steady. In the space of a few years, world titles, prestigious awards and increasingly convincing results have arrived. In 2023 he received the Golden Collar of Paralympic Sports Merit, a sign of a now complete rebirth.

Gold that tells the story of a life

The triumph of Milan-Cortina represents the culmination of this journey. On the track, Perathoner showed confidence, speed and control, dominating all phases of the race until the big final, where he imposed his own pace without leaving room for his opponents.

Behind that perfect descent, however, there is a deeper story: that of an athlete who transformed a dramatic moment into a new beginning. His success is not only a medal for Italy, but the demonstration that in sport – and in life – determination can change one’s destiny.
