From today the ETA requirement officially comes into force for those who want to set foot in the United Kingdom. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a weekend in London, a summer English course or a business trip: the electronic travel authorization has become an essential step for Italians too. The system had already been introduced in 2025, but from today 25 February 2026 it becomes fully operational. Without Eta, you simply can’t leave.
What Eta really is and why it was introduced
The Eta (Electronic Travel Authorisation) is not a traditional visa, but a digital permit linked to the passport. It was created to strengthen security checks and more precisely monitor entries into the country after Brexit.
The model is reminiscent of systems already in use elsewhere, such as the US one, and marks a change of pace in relations between London and European countries. Those who previously could travel freely for stays of less than six months now must obtain prior authorization. The Eta allows entry for tourism, business or short periods of study, with stays of up to six months for each trip.
Who should request it (and who shouldn’t)
The obligation concerns citizens of 85 countries, including Italy and San Marino. Minors must also request it, without exceptions. Special attention for those with dual citizenship: those who hold a British passport are exempt, but those traveling with a passport from a country subject to the obligation must still obtain the ETA. Only those who already have a valid visa or UK residency status are excluded.
How much does it cost and how long does it last
The cost is 16 pounds (approximately 18.50 euros) per person, regardless of age. Payment is made online and the fee is non-refundable in case of refusal. Once approved, the authorization is valid for two years – unless the passport expires early – and allows multiple entries during the period of validity. A relevant aspect for those who travel often for work or study.
As requested
The application can be submitted exclusively online, via the official GOV.UK website or the dedicated app. You need a valid passport, email address and electronic payment card. During the procedure, personal data, travel details and security declarations are requested. No paper documents: the ETA is entirely digital and linked to the passport.
