On Friday 12 December, Italy will be affected by a general strike proclaimed by the CGIL, which will involve all working sectors, public and private, including those in contract and support services. The mobilization will last all day, from midnight until 9pm, and will particularly affect transport, schools, healthcare and public administration.
The strike was called to contest the 2026 Budget Law, considered by the union to be unfair and insufficient to resolve the country’s social and economic problems.
Rail transport
The staff of the FS Group, Trenitalia, Trenitalia Tper, Italo and Trenord will cross their arms from midnight until 9pm. As regards regional transport, essential services are guaranteed on weekdays between 6am and 9am and 6pm and 9pm.
Long-distance trains and Frecce will be guaranteed according to agreements with companies, while convoys already underway will only be able to reach their destination if the arrival station can be reached within an hour of the start of the unrest; otherwise, the train will stop at an intermediate station. Passengers can request refunds up to the departure time for Intercity and Frecce, and up to midnight of the previous day for regional trains.

The strike will also involve highways, logistics, ports and taxis, guaranteeing only minimum essential services. The firefighters will fold their arms from 9:00 to 13:00 shift workers, while the staff with ordinary hours will only work according to the reduced shift. Schools may suffer suspensions or reductions in canteen and after-school services.
The following are not subject to strike: air transport personnel, Ministry of Justice, environmental hygiene and some essential categories according to Law 146/1990.
