Goodbye Matilde Lorenzi, little young promise of Italian skiing

He would have turned 20 on November 15th, Matilde Lorenziwhich has left an immense void in the world of sport and beyond.
Promising Italian skier, Lorenzi died following an accident during training in Alto Adige, along the Grawald 1 slope in Val Senales. He was there for prepare for the new sports seasonbut a disastrous fall was fatal.

According to an initial reconstruction, the young woman was going down the slope when her skis split apart and caused her to lose contact with the snow cover. She first hit her face violently on the frozen ground, then one of her skis came loose and the 20-year-old ended up off the slopes.

A tragic sequence filmed by the webcam of Iceman Ötzi Peak, one of the highest viewing platforms in Europe at more than 3 thousand metres. The helicopter took about 20 minutes to reach the accident site, the skier was then transported to the San Maurizio hospital in Bolzano where she had already arrived in very critical conditions.

Member of the Army Sports Center and member of the junior women’s team, in 2017 she said that skiing had taught her to compete, to be happy, “to give my best“. She then only came to the fore last year, when she won the Italian overall and youth title in super-G in Sarentino and, again last year, she placed sixth in downhill and eighth in super-G in the Junior World Championships of Chatel, France. He also boasted an eleventh place in super-G in St. Moritz in December 2023 as his best European Cup finish.
