He defied bombs to save animals from war: activist Jesse Adams was killed by a drone in Ukraine

Canadian volunteer Jesse Adams, founder of the RainCoast Dog Rescue Society, was killed at the age of 41 on October 25 in Kramatorsk, in the Donetsk region of Ukraine. The man, a veteran of the armed forces and expert in international humanitarian missions, was the victim of an attack conducted by a remotely piloted FPV drone, which hit the windshield of the rescue vehicle in which he was traveling together with colleagues from the local organization Animal Rescue Kharkiv. Despite the desperate attempts at resuscitation and the emergency surgery performed by the doctors in the local hospital, the very serious injuries sustained in the impact left him no escape.

A life spent saving the last and the animals under the bombs

Before losing his life on the front lines, Jesse Adams had dedicated over 16 years to saving the most vulnerable animals around the world, participating in complex interventions such as the evacuation of dogs and cats from Kabul in 2021 during the Afghan crisis. In Ukraine, where he was on his third consecutive trip, the rescuer coordinated teams capable of carrying out up to 5 missions per week to rescue hundreds of creatures incapable of understanding war from the hot zones of Donbas. Just a few days before his death, the group had managed to rescue 80 dogs and cats, as well as assisting stranded families with farm animals including cows, pigs and goats.

International condolences and memories of comrades

The passing of Jesse Adams profoundly shook the global community of animal protectors and his life partner Eddie Henry, who remembered him as his point of reference and a man capable of making the supreme sacrifice for his beliefs. Multiple organizations, including the Victoria Humane Society and SPCA International, celebrated his extraordinary humanity and absolute dedication to each and every animal. The moral legacy of the Canadian volunteer remains entrusted to the hundreds of lives saved in years of courageous humanitarian battles conducted where no one else would have dared to set foot.
