How to save your plants after the holidays (even if they seem death)

Are they returned from vacation and plants badly? Don’t panic. With a little patience and the right precautions you can remedy the situation and bring your shining plants back as before.

The first thing: the water

When you return you must immediately check the ground. If it is dry as the desert means that the plants have suffered thirst during your absence. In this case you have to act gently.

Take a basin, fill it with warm water and dip the pots for at least an hour. In doing so, the soil absorbs water slowly without creating shock to the plant. Then drain the water well from the drainage holes.

If, on the other hand, you find the ground too wet then there was too much rain or someone has exaggerated with watering. Remove the water immediately from the sauce and do not wet for a few days. In the most serious cases you will have to repot with new and dry earth.

Spring cleaning (even if we are in summer)

After setting up irrigation, it’s time to do some order. Arm yourself with well -clean scissors and cut away everything that is dry, yellowed or rotten. Don’t be pity: the ruined leaves remove energy from the plant.

As you do this job, keep your eyes open for various parasites. If you see aphids, red spikes or other annoying insects, intervene immediately with a nice treatment. A little Marseille soap dissolved in the water often solves the problem.

The dirty leaves don’t breathe

During the holidays on the leaves, dust accumulates which prevents the plant from breathing well. Take a damp cloth or better still of the wet wet and gently clean every leaf.

If you have plants with small and delicate leaves you can put them in the shower with warm water. The important thing is not to use cold water that could give a thermal shock.

Question of light

Often when you start, the plants in more shaded positions move thinking that so it suffers less. But on the return you have to put them back in their usual place near the windows.

But be careful: if the plants have been in the dark for weeks, do not immediately expose them to the direct sun. Better a gradual approach to prevent the leaves from burning.

The fertilizer: but not immediately

Wait at least a week before fertilizing. The plant must first recover from the stress of the holidays. When you see that he has taken over then you can give it some nourishment.

For the flowery plants used fertilizers rich in phosphorus, for green ones instead better those with more nitrogen. But do not exaggerate with the doses: too fertilizer does more damage than benefits.

Other useful tricks

If the air of the house is dry, put some water containers near the plants or use a humidifier. Tropical plants in particular will thank you.

Continue to keep an eye on your plants in the following weeks. If you see strange spots on the leaves or other suspicious symptoms do not wait: intervene immediately before the situation worst.

With a little attention and these precautions your plants will return beautiful as before. The important thing is not to be discouraged at the first glance: often plants are more resistant than what they seem and know how to recover also from situations that seem desperate.
