I cycled along the Mincio cycle path, from Peschiera del Garda to Mantua (and I’ll tell you about an unmissable gem in Borghetto)

There are routes that are small journeys into Italian beauty. This is exactly what I experienced cycling along the Mincio cycle path, one of the most evocative itineraries in Northern Italy. We started from the fascinating Peschiera del Garda, a fortress city overlooking the lake and surrounded by the Venetian walls, a UNESCO heritage site.

Here the landscape changes rapidly: from the lake atmosphere you enter a world of rivers, cultivated fields and silence. A few minutes in the saddle are enough to understand why this route is considered one of the most popular cycle paths in Italy. Far from traffic and immersed in nature, the route follows the course of the Mincio river, offering views that seem to come from a postcard.

The route: from the fortress of Peschiera to Valeggio

The complete cycle path connects Peschiera del Garda to Mantua, crossing approximately 45 kilometers between green landscapes, moraine hills and small historic centres. I chose to travel one of the most popular stretches: the one that reaches Valeggio sul Mincio, about 15 kilometers long, also passing through the picturesque Monzambano.

After leaving the historic center of Peschiera behind, the route descends towards the river and from there the real magic begins. The track runs alongside the water, crosses cultivated fields, naturalistic areas and small bridges that allow you to observe the Mincio from ever-changing perspectives. By pedaling you realize how rich this area is in biodiversity: herons, ducks and other animals populate the river, while the colors of the fields change with the seasons.

A perfect itinerary for everyone

It is a perfect route for everyone: almost completely flat, well signposted and also ideal for children. The cycle path is wide, safe and separated from car traffic. For this reason it is frequented by expert cyclists, families and walkers, but also by those who simply want to enjoy a few hours in the open air. The surface alternates asphalt and well-trodden dirt sections, while the signs make it almost impossible to take a wrong turn. You don’t need to be a great athlete: all you need is a bike and the desire to discover an authentic corner of the area.

Borghetto sul Mincio: the postcard village

The most exciting moment of the ride comes when you glimpse the first glimpses of Borghetto sul Mincio, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. This small medieval village seems suspended in time. The stone houses built on the water, the mill wheels and the little bridges that cross the river create a romantic and almost fairy-tale atmosphere. A selfie is a must here, although it’s not easy to make your way on weekends.

Dominating the landscape is the majestic Ponte Visconteo, an extraordinary 14th century fortified dam commissioned by Gian Galeazzo Visconti. Over 650 meters long, this imposing bridge represented a strategic defensive system connected to the nearby Scaliger Castle. Walking through the small streets of the village you can perceive the strong link between history, water and nature. Here the water mills have worked for centuries grinding cereals, while today they house restaurants and shops.

The cycle path that continues to Mantua

After Borghetto and Valeggio, the cycle path continues southwards. The route continues through other historic towns such as Pozzolo and Volta Mantovana, until arriving at the splendid Mantua, the city of the Gonzaga family surrounded by the waters of the Mincio. Those who have more time and training can tackle the entire journey or use the bicibus service, which takes cyclists and bicycles back to the starting point.

A slow journey through Italian landscapes

This ride reminded me how special it is to travel at a slow pace. The Mincio cycle path is not just a sporting route: it is a way to discover medieval villages, agricultural landscapes and uncontaminated nature. From the historical charm of Peschiera del Garda to the magic of Borghetto sul Mincio, up to the possibility of arriving in Mantua, this itinerary represents one of the most authentic ways to explore the area. And at the end of the day a precise sensation remains: some roads are not traveled only with the bike, but with eyes full of wonder.
