Arriving in Bobbio means crossing an invisible border between present and past. As soon as you glimpse the profile of the Devil’s Bridge over the Trebbia river, the sensation is that of entering a perfectly preserved medieval postcard. The village, nestled between the Piacentini Hills and the Trebbia Valley, retains an authentic charm made of stone alleys, ancient buildings and views that change color with the light of the day.
It is not difficult to understand why it was elected the Most Beautiful Village in Italy and awarded the Orange Flag. Here every step tells a story, every square invites you to slow down, every perspective seems built to surprise. Our visit soon became an immersive experience, more than just a tourist itinerary.
The Devil’s Bridge, iconic symbol of the village
As mentioned, Bobbio immediately presents itself with its iconic symbol: the famous Ponte Gobbo, also called Devil’s Bridge. Its eleven irregular arches create an unmistakable silhouette that is reflected in the water of the Trebbia. Walking on it, especially at sunset, offers one of the most evocative images of the entire village.

According to legend, it was built by the devil to hinder the monks of the abbey, but the result is an architectural masterpiece with an almost surreal charm. Crossing it on foot allows you to slowly enter the heart of the historic centre, leaving the noise of the street behind and embracing a timeless atmosphere.
The Abbey of San Colombano and the historic heart
Our itinerary then continued to the center of Bobbio which revolves around the Abbey of San Colombano, founded in 614 by the Irish monk who transformed the village into one of the most important centers of European monasticism. The complex is imposing and contains centuries of history, between silent cloisters and stratified architecture.

Inside there is also the City Museum, which tells the story of the evolution of the village through finds and testimonies. Walking in this area means breathing in the most ancient soul of Bobbio, among hidden courtyards and architectural details that suddenly emerge.
Between castle, cathedral and medieval streets
Going up towards the upper part of the village we encountered the Malaspina Dal Verme Castle, which dominates the landscape with its tower. From above there is a panoramic view of the Trebbia Valley, one of the most evocative panoramas in the area. It is the perfect point to observe the compact structure of the village and the stone roofs that follow one another up to the river.

In the historic center, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is also worth a visit, with its three naves and frescoes that tell of centuries of religious art. Not far away are the 14th century Palace and the Convent of San Francesco, evidence of a medieval past that is still clearly visible. Walking aimlessly is probably the best way to discover Bobbio: narrow alleys, stone arches and small squares create a spontaneous and fascinating path, where every corner becomes a discovery.

When to visit Bobbio and why to go there
Bobbio is a perfect destination in every season. In spring and summer the nature of Val Trebbia offers intense colors and pleasant temperatures. Autumn is ideal for those seeking romantic atmospheres among golden woods and soft light. Winter, however, transforms the village into an almost fairy-tale setting, especially when snow covers the bridge and roofs.
The compact size of the town allows you to visit it calmly in half a day, but my advice is to take the time to savor the atmosphere. Stopping in a square, crossing the bridge several times, taking a photo, watching the river flow slowly: these are the moments that make Bobbio a memorable experience.
Those looking for an authentic village, far from frenetic tourism, will find a perfect balance here between history, landscape and silence. Bobbio doesn’t just show itself: it lets itself be discovered step by step, with the discretion of places that don’t need to amaze to remain impressed.
