There is a moment, arriving in Ostuni, in which the landscape suddenly changes: expanses of centuries-old olive trees, red earth and, on the horizon, a completely whitewashed village that shines in the sun. It’s not just a scenographic effect. The choice of white, adopted since the Middle Ages, served to sanitize the homes and reflect the light in the narrow streets, transforming the city into a luminous maze. Today that color has become the very identity of the “White City”, one of the most fascinating destinations in Puglia that has literally conquered us.
The historic center between alleys and panoramic views
We chose the evening, the time when the city comes alive, to visit Ostuni. Its heart is a tangle of winding streets, stone arches and small squares that suddenly open up. We walked aimlessly, encountering artisan shops, flower-filled balconies and panoramic views of the Itria Valley. The streets intertwine in a labyrinth of white houses, stairways and stone arches. Every curve offers glimpses of the Itria Valley or the sea in the distance. Following the Via Cattedrale you arrive at the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, with its large Gothic rose window that dominates the city. From here the view is astonishing: white roofs as far as the eye can see and, on clear days, the Adriatic shining on the horizon.

Piazza della Libertà and the liveliest atmosphere
Going down to the lower part you reach Piazza della Libertà , the liveliest heart. Here you will find clubs, restaurants, the imposing Obelisk of Sant’Oronzo and historic buildings that tell of centuries of domination. It is the ideal spot for a break, observing city life among tourists and locals. Not far away, the Aragonese walls and the ancient gates tell of the defensive past of the city.

Sea, nature and beaches just a few minutes from the city
But Ostuni is not just history. A few kilometers from the center there is a surprising coastline, with sandy coves, rocky stretches and crystal clear water. Among the most popular are Costa Merlata, Rosa Marina and the beaches of Monticelli, ideal both for those seeking relaxation and for those who love exploring wilder stretches. A little further south, the Torre Guaceto Nature Reserve offers an uncontaminated landscape made up of dunes, Mediterranean scrub and seabeds perfect for snorkelling and birdwatching.

Flavors and traditions of the White City
The visit to Ostuni ends at the table. The local cuisine combines products from the land and flavors of the sea: orecchiette with turnip tops, broad beans and chicory, fresh fish and extra virgin olive oil produced from the olive groves surrounding the city. Between white alleys and golden sunsets, Ostuni remains a destination capable of surprising in every season, between thousand-year-old history, iconic landscapes and a Mediterranean atmosphere that conquers at first glance.
Ostuni, a journey between light and the Mediterranean
Visiting Ostuni means alternating white alleys, hilly panoramas and crystal clear sea. It is a city to live slowly, letting yourself be guided by instinct. Between the historic center, beaches and villages of the Itria Valley, each stop adds a detail to a journey that remains imprinted for its Mediterranean light and authentic atmosphere.
