There are places that only really reveal themselves when you walk through them slowly. This is what I felt while pedaling along the Caorle–Falconera cycle path, an itinerary of around 9 kilometres, also suitable for those traveling on foot or with the family (it was in fact full of children fascinated by these strange little houses which are a bit reminiscent of those of The Lord of the Rings) which allows you to come into direct contact with the most authentic soul of the Caorle lagoon.
A perfect alternative to the classic day on the beach, capable of surprising even those who think they already know this Venetian location. And that’s exactly what we did, taking advantage of a gray and not very hot day, perfect for a bike ride. Our itinerary started from the end of the Trieste seafront from which, in a few pedal strokes, we took via dei Casoni.

At first glance you immediately understand that you are entering an area with a strong fishing tradition. Nets spread out in the sun and moored boats tell of a daily life that is still alive, far from the noisiest tourism. Soon we begin to observe the first casoni, buildings made of wood and reeds, immersed between water and sky. Walking among these refuges, I understood why Ernest Hemingway was fascinated by these places, so much so that he mentioned them in his novel Across the river and into the trees.

The Sentiero dei Casoni: the heart of the ride
We therefore followed the Sentiero dei Casoni, skirting the lagoon between reeds and bodies of water. It is the feature that struck me the most: the atmosphere becomes essential, almost suspended, and the private houses suddenly appear, each different from the other. Some are still used by fishermen, others tell the story of the past through simple but ingenious construction details. Here the lagoon shows its most authentic and less tamed face.

Moving away from the town center we leave room for true nature. Cycling here gives a rare feeling of freedom: the sound of the wind, the water that accompanies the route and a quiet that invites you to slow down. It is easy to understand why this part of Caorle is often defined as the most “real”.

A slow itinerary
This bike itinerary in Caorle is much more than a simple sightseeing tour. It is a slow journey, made of silences, casual encounters with fishermen, scents of the lagoon and views that tell the story of the Veneto. Traveling through it firsthand allowed me to understand how these places still live in balance between man and the environment. An experience that I recommend to those looking for something authentic, far from the frenetic pace and close to the essence of the territory.

Madonna dell’Angelo and a Spritz in the centre
And if you have time left over, once the ring has been completed, you can extend the route a little by walking along the Levante beach to the Sanctuary of the Madonna dell’Angelo. You cannot remain indifferent: a stop to admire the view is a must. The advice is to get there in the late afternoon, when the light of the sunset lights up the colors of the sea and the lagoon and why not, in perfect time to enjoy an inevitable Spritz in the center among the colorful houses typical of Caorle.
