If you eat rusks, here is the best brand you can find in the supermarket according to Altroconsumo

Rusks represent a stable presence on Italian breakfast tables. Crunchy, easy to store and suitable for many combinations, they accompany the awakening of millions of people every day. There are those who consume them plain, those who prefer them with jam or honey and those who transform them into a base for spreads of all kinds. An apparently simple food, which however hides many differences between one package and another.

The first doubts emerge right in front of the supermarket shelf. The offer appears vast and includes classic, wholemeal, cereal versions, with seeds, without added sugar, with little salt, gluten-free and even covered in chocolate. In the midst of so many promises and captivating words, finding your way becomes complicated for those who want a balanced product from a nutritional point of view.

To clarify, Altroconsumo conducted an in-depth test that examined over 100 rusks belonging to different types. The investigation aimed to go beyond packaging marketing, with the aim of understanding what the products that end up on our tables every morning really contain.

The analysis involved large brands, supermarket private labels and discount products, offering a detailed snapshot of the Italian market. Ingredients, nutritional values, presence of additives and level of industrial processing have come under the scrutiny of the experts of the consumer association.

After having already addressed the chapter dedicated to wholemeal rusks, attention is now focused on the classic versions, which in the test turned out to be 47 in total. And it is precisely in this category that a product clearly emerges that stands out from the others.

How the Altroconsumo test was conducted

The test involved over 100 rusks of various types, including the classic and wholemeal versions. The evaluation was based on an overall score from 0 to 100, constructed from various criteria.

Nutritional quality, which accounts for 55% of the final rating, is based on the Nutri-score and takes into consideration calories, saturated fats, sugars and salt as elements to limit, along with fibre, proteins and other positively evaluated nutrients.

Additives account for 15% and penalize the presence of preservatives, colorants and additional substances, also classified based on their safety profile. A further 15% concerns the degree of industrial transformation, with a negative rating for ultra-processed ingredients such as maltodextrins, glucose syrups or fructose.

The presence of artificial sweeteners affects 10% of the score, while the recommended portion size affects the remaining 5%, with a penalty for larger portions.

The products were purchased at ten supermarket and discount chains, with measurements carried out in July 2025. Based on the final score, the rusks were divided into five rating bands: Very good (80-100), Good (60-79), Acceptable (40-59), Poor (20-39) and Very poor (0-19).
