If you are looking for a weekend immersed in the history and tradition of Trentino, you are in the right place. I started my visit from the village of Rango, a breathtaking destination. Belonging to the club of the most beautiful villages in Italy, Rango surprises with its paved streets, granite and quicklime houses and characteristic vaulted porticoes, known as portechwhere merchants, shepherds and pilgrims once found refuge. Walking through the entrance halls and cellars, it almost feels like going back in time, breathing in the rural atmosphere of a village that has managed to preserve its medieval identity.
Rango and its alleys
The heart of the village beats in the central square, dominated by a square fountain that once watered the flocks and provided water to the inhabitants. All around there are peasant houses with balconies decorated with corn cobs and signs of ancient trades: the knife grinder, the moleta, the umbrella maker. Each alley tells stories of peasant life, between barrel vaults and porticoes under which today, in winter, the famous (and crowded) Christmas markets take place, with local crafts and gastronomic delicacies.

Balbido: the painted village a few steps away
To visit the second village I only needed to walk a few minutes, without needing to take the car. Moving a few hundred meters from the center of Rango, you find Balbido, nicknamed the “painted village”. Here the facades of the houses tell country stories, legends and traditions through colorful murals created in naive and graffiti style.

But the real star of the village is the largest witch in the world, over 10 meters tall and built with woven bamboo canes, which dominates the entrance to the town and has won the Guinness Book of Records. Walking through Balbido, you have the sensation of entering a world suspended between popular art and fantasy.

Canale di Tenno: a fairytale village
Finally I headed towards Lake Garda and reached Canale di Tenno, a medieval village perched at 600 meters above sea level. Its compact structure and stone houses with wooden arches and galleries evoke atmospheres of times gone by. Among the most evocative corners, the House of Artists houses works and exhibitions that celebrate international creativity, while the Agricultural Tools Museum tells the story of the hard work in the fields, from hay making tools to milk and wine processing. Walking around Canale means getting lost among silent alleys, small squares and views that seem frozen in time.

Events and traditions
Each village has its own soul and its own events: in Rango, the Christmas markets and the Wooden Sculpture Symposium enliven the streets with art and flavours; in Canale di Tenno, in addition to the Christmas markets which are also very famous, the historical re-enactment Rustico Medioevo transports visitors to the era of knights and ladies, among banners and lit torches. And for those who love nature, both villages offer panoramic paths, from the Sentiero della Noce a Rango to Lake Tenno a few minutes from Canale, with turquoise waters and landscapes that capture the eye.

An experience to live
Visiting Rango, Balbido and Canale di Tenno means stopping time and savoring the life of the Trentino villages, between art, history and nature. Every step through the medieval streets, every glimpse of the landscape and every artisan shop offers authentic emotions, transforming a simple weekend into an unforgettable journey through tradition, mystery and beauty.
