The landslide that hit Niscemi, in the province of Caltanissetta, not only left dozens of people homeless, but also endangered hundreds of domestic and farm animals trapped in the red zone. In an area marked by continuous landslides and unstable terrain, the rescue efforts turned into a race against time.
Among the most complex interventions was the rescue of 15 horses, 3 donkeys and 2 dogs, who remained isolated for four days downstream from the slide front, about 150 meters from the landslide. The firefighters worked in difficult conditions, creating a two kilometer path through accumulations of earth and differences in height of more than ten metres, to allow the safe passage of the animals.
To make the route passable, the teams cleared the area using chainsaws, spades and pickaxes, removing obstacles and vegetation. Lifelines have been installed in the most critical sections, essential to guarantee the safety of both operators and animals during progression. A slow and meticulous job, completed without accidents.

Not just horses: dogs, cats and parrots
At the same time, recoveries continue in the evacuated buildings. So far, around 300 interventions have been carried out, including animals and personal property, with an average of 70-80 operations per day. The firefighters enter homes together with the owners, subject to authorization from the municipal police, trying to limit the time of exposure to risk to a minimum. Dogs, cats and parrots, often considered an integral part of the evacuated families, were rescued.
In homes located 50-70 meters from the landslide front, however, recoveries are not permitted. “The risk is too high even for operators“, explain from the Caltanissetta fire brigade command. A difficult choice, which leaves many residents in anguish of not being able to help their animals.
The association I strays of Niscemi also operates in this context, having launched urgent appeals to find temporary accommodation for the animals left without a home. In some cases, thanks to mobilization, quick solutions have been found, but the emergency remains open. The landslide continues to advance and saving defenseless people and animals remains the priority.
