“Interstella 5555”, the anime film made by Daft Punk, returns to the cinema in a restored 4k version: the dates to be noted

Twenty years after its release, Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystemThe anime film made by Daft Punk in collaboration with Leiji Matsumoto and Toei Animation, will finally return to the big screen.

From 12 to 15 December 2024a version restored in 4K will be screened in over 800 cinemas spread across 40 countries, offering viewers the rare opportunity to see the cult film in theaters. In Italy, the screenings will be organized by Nexo Studios.

Launched in 2003, Interstella 5555 is a one-of-a-kind work, created as a visual accompaniment to the album Discoveryone of Daft Punk’s most iconic works. AND devoid of dialogueif we exclude the lyrics of the songs that make up the soundtrack, such as “One More Time”, “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” and “Digital Love”, which have become true anthems of modern electronics.

The film tells the story history of the Crescendollsan alien band kidnapped by a secret organization to be transformed into a successful terrestrial musical group, with the aim of subjugating humanity. Shep, a space hero who risks his life to free them, intervenes to save the musicians, a sacrifice that awakens in people the desire to rebel against manipulation.

The announcement of the return of Interstella 5555 brought to light an almost forgotten film, often considered a “relic” by Daft Punk’s most passionate fans. In recent years, the film was available only through some rare DVD copies.

However, the interest around this visual work has been reborn, fueled by special screenings, such as the one that took place at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2024. To celebrate the event, in addition to the return to theaters, there will also be relaunched the album Discovery in a limited collector’s edition.

This new release will include the original artwork from the 2003 Japanese edition, special Daft Club stickers and cards, and will be available in several versions: 5555 copies of gold vinyl, 5555 numbered CDs and 25,000 black vinyls. To this we add one merchandising line dedicated to the Crescendolls, with t-shirts and gadgets inspired by the alien band protagonist of the film.

Pre-sales of tickets for screenings they will start on November 13th and they are awaited by an audience that has long hoped for a return of Daft Punk, or at least, a celebration of their artistic legacy. Interstella 5555with its unique mix of music and visual storytelling, represents one of the most fascinating collaborations between electronic music and animation and is now ready to be rediscovered by all generations.
