After the great vigil of August 2 and the Mass of 3, which saw over a million and a half of pilgrims gather in Tor Vergata for the young man’s jubilee, numerous images and videos of the lunch boxes left on the ground, partly intact, circulated on social networks. Still packaged sandwiches, sealed biscuits, non -open fruit juices, a situation that has aroused strong criticisms, especially online, where many spoke of a “huge food waste”.
But did it really go like this? Fortunately not, not all that food has been lost. Indeed, most of the foods and drinks present in the lunch boxes and advanced have been recovered and will be intended for those who need it most.
What the Lunch Box contained
Each pilgrim received, at a cost of 35 euros (also including insurance and jubilee kit), a complete package of meals to cover Saturday dinner, breakfast and Sunday lunch. According to what can also be seen from the videos shared on social media, each box included:

Where the advanced lunch boxes ended
The food left on the lawn – largely still perfectly intact – was promptly collected by dozens of volunteers. To deal with it were associations committed daily in the fight against food poverty, such as Caritas, the food counter and other third sector realities.
We immediately took delivery of the sandwiches and sandwich – explain from Caritas to Rome TODAY – because they are perishable genres and before they run away, they will be distributed in our canteens, as well as to the solidarity emporium of Ponte Casilino.
For long conservation products – biscuits, tuna and legume preserves, juices, snacks – the distribution will take place from September. Some foods will be used for food parcels intended for vulnerable families, others will end up in the various solidarity emporses of the diocesan network.
Fortunately, this time the management of advanced food has been careful and well coordinated so as to avoid any food waste.
