“Let’s free the two buzzards tied in front of the Coldiretti headquarters: out of the Middle Ages!”: the appeal against the cruel practice

They should fly free, but two Harris’ Buzzards continue to live chained in front of the national headquarters of Coldiretti. After a first complaint last year, the two birds of prey were moved, but have now returned to their fate of captivity. The images released by LAV show the animals kept outdoors, often without water or shelter, used as deterrents against other birds.

A behavior that represents a form of animal abuse disguised as bird control. The animal rights association has once again documented the situation, accusing Coldiretti of not having abandoned practices which it defines as “medieval and cruel”.

A complaint that has been going on for over a year

Already in October 2024, LAV had published a video in which a buzzard was seen tied to a trunk in front of the Coldiretti headquarters. Then the association invited citizens to protest on the social channels of the agricultural group with the slogan “Out of the Middle Ages!”. A year later, the scene seems to repeat itself identically, as if nothing had changed.

The Harris’s buzzard, a bird of prey native to America, is an intelligent and social species, unsuitable for living in captivity, much less for being used as a “living scarecrow”. Yet, precisely for this purpose, the animals remain chained for hours, under sun or rain, in a context that conflicts with any principle of animal welfare.

Behind the pretext of “damage to agriculture”, according to the LAV, lies an antiquated vision of the relationship between man and nature. Instead of adopting sustainable and non-bloody solutions, Coldiretti – accuses the association – continues to resort to methods of coercion and exploitation.

The protest does not stop: LAV calls for immediate measures and invites public opinion to make their voices heard. Because keeping animals tied up to scare other animals is the symbol of a mentality that ignores respect for wild life and the freedom that these birds of prey represent.
