Inevitable and beautiful, they arrive tonight Eta Aquaridsthe shooting stars most famous of spring. The swarm, particularly intense (weather permitting), will reach its peak in nights around May 5th. We don’t miss out and we prepare many wishes!
As the UAI explains, the Eta Aquarids they are the queen shooting stars of the month of May (and of northern spring in general). The swarm, associated with the comet of Halleywill reach its maximum in the first days of the month, in particular around May 5th.
In ideal conditions their ZHR (i.e. the frequency, Editor’s note) can reach around 50 – specifies the UAI – but at Italian latitudes it is more realistic to expect values between 20 and 30 meteors per hour, with very rapid events often characterized by persistent trails
Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on personal tastes), tomorrow May 1st the full Flower Moon will be high in the sky, and this could make the observation of shooting stars more difficult, reducing their number, especially those of weak luminosity.
For this reason, experts recommend observing especially before dawn, with the Moon now low on the horizon, in order to minimize its disturbance (on the map the sky of May 5, 2026 at approximately 5.00 am).
