LiLou, the pig hired to combat the anxiety and stress of passengers at San Francisco airport

At San Francisco International Airport, travelers were able to meet a very special guest: LiLou, a pig, was hired in 2019 to calm passengers’ anxiety and stress. Part of the pet therapy program launched by the airport, LiLou showed how even a pig can become a source of comfort and smiles in a hectic environment like the airport.

Wearing a pilot’s cap, a scarf and with her toenails painted bright red, LiLou wandered through corridors, gates and metal detectors, ready to be photographed and caressed by passengers. Not only did he pose, but he also learned to perform little tricks, such as raising a hoof in greeting or playing a toy piano, demonstrating surprising intelligence.

The Wag Brigade program

LiLou was the first pig in the world enlisted for this type of task. She was part of the Wag Brigade, a team of therapy animals trained by the San Francisco SPCA designed to help passengers relax and create a more welcoming environment. According to the owner, Tatyana Danilova, people were usually very happy to meet her.

The program aims to reduce travel stress, but it has also generated an unexpected effect: a deeper bond between travelers and the airport, thanks to the presence of LiLou and the other animals. The pig had successfully passed all the required temperament tests, demonstrating a calm, sociable and stable character, ideal for Pet therapy work.
