The most accredited theory for its pigmentation is that of ethrism

With a wing opening of over three metersthis manta stands out not only for its size, but above all for its unusual color. The researchers of Project Mantaa scientific group that studies these giants of the sea, are analyzing the cause of this pigmentation.

The initial hypotheses, such as a skin disease or a vascular reactionwere excluded thanks to a leather sample taken from the animal. Currently the most accredited theory is that oferythrisma rare genetic mutation which alters the pigmentation making it pink or reddish.

Contrary to what one might think, the diet and the environment do not seem to have any role in this color: the uniqueness of Clouseau is all written in his DNA. The manta enjoys good health, is observed regularly and is often seen interacting with female specimens, suggesting a typical social behavior.

This unique case not only fascinates for its beauty, but opens new ways to research. If the genetic mutation It should be transmissible, we could in the future observe the birth of a New generation of pink mantles. The story of Inspector Clouseau reminds us how much the nature is unpredictable and full of surprises. Protect these ecosystems It is essential to continue to discover and understand wonders that still escape us, kept in the seabed of our planet.
