Moments of tension in San Giovanni Lupatoto, in the province of Verona, where a she-wolf was trapped in an artificial canal, unable to climb the steep concrete banks. The animal, in obvious difficulty, had taken refuge near the pylon of a walkway, looking for a safe spot above the icy waters of the Giuliari canal.
The intervention of the firefighters
Two teams of the Verona fire brigade intervened on site, including one specialized in river rescue, coordinated with great precision by the official on duty. Veterinarians from Ulss 9 Scaligera and the provincial police also arrived in support to ensure safety and management of the area. The operation took place in a complex context: the slippery banks and the flow of water made every movement dangerous, both for the animal and for the rescuers.
Sedation and recovery
To ensure the safety of the she-wolf and the rescuers, veterinarians administered a sedative. Once the animal temporarily lost consciousness, teams proceeded to secure it with ropes and nets, carefully lifting it to the shore. The recovery moment was delicate: every movement had to be calculated to avoid stress or injury. The end result was a success: the she-wolf was rescued without harm.
She is now under observation before being released
After recovery, the wolf was subjected to an initial veterinary examination on site and subsequently entrusted to the provincial police. The animal was transferred to the Wild Animal Recovery Center (Cras), where it will remain under observation to monitor its health conditions before being reintroduced into nature. An episode which, once again, shows how wildlife is often exposed to dangers created by man and urbanisation.
