“Male chicks, it is time to apply the law”: from Mario Tozzi to Giulia Innocenzi the appeal to the government to say stop the massacre

Just kill male chicks! Account the immediate demolition of male chicks, considered non -profitable for the production of eggs, now also sort public figures.

Although a 2022 law provides for the introduction of measures to ban this practice by the end of 2026, the implementing decrees have not yet been issued. Therefore, millions of male chicks continue to be killed every year.

To raise public awareness and solicit government intervention, the Animal Equality organization has invited several personalities to sign a real manifesto.

From Mario Tozzi to Giulia Innocenzi, from the comic duo Le Colici to Rosita Celentano to the TV conductor Edoardo Stoppa, many have chosen to express their support in favor of the implementation of the 2022 law that will be able to save their lives for millions of male chicks every year.

Victims of the egg industry, where they are considered only as a waste because they are useless for production purposes, these animals are currently killed when they are still completely conscious, a few hours after their birth. This occurs despite a law approved by the Italian Parliament in 2022 establishes the ban on their killing, as well as in France, Germany and Holland.

Italian law provides that The prohibition enters into force by the end of 2026but in the absence of the planned implementing measures, millions of chicks risk continuing to be killed.

The killing of male chicks is a medieval barbarism in industrial sauce. This practice is one of the greatest aberrations in the zootechnical industry and Italy must put an end as soon as possible, says the journalist Giulia Innocenzi.

Stopping this cruel practice is essential: profit cannot justify the killing of millions of animals. The alternatives exist and there is a law, the prohibition must be fully brought, Mario Tozzi urges.

To give application to the law of 4 August 2022, n.127, iThe Government should have published the implementing measures by April 7, 2024.

So far the Lollobrigida, Schillaci and Urso ministers have not responded to our stresses, limiting themselves to giving vague answers to parliamentary questions that cannot in any way justify the suffering of the 30 million male chicks killed every year in Italy. In February, the Ministry of Agriculture, for example, argued that the machinery that egg producers should use to avoid killing chicks are too bulky to be adopted by companies. Yet these technologies are already used on a large scale in Germany, where the plants have structures comparable to Italian ones – says Ombretta Alessandrini, head of the animal Equality Italy campaigns. The killing of the male chicks is a hidden practice of the food industry that can finally be stopped, but it is unacceptable that a law voted by Parliament and supported by thousands of citizens signed by our petition remains pending, or worse, is ignored. We ask the government not to turn to the other side and listen to our appeal.
