The national ranking for access to Medicine courses will be made public on 8 January 2026 through the Universitaly portal. Each candidate will be able to view their position and the university assigned based on the results obtained and the places available.
The numbers of the filter semester
The filter semester tests ended in December, with a total of 25,450 eligible, of which 22,427 for the Medicine course alone. The new system included two sessions to evaluate students’ skills through tests on three fundamental subjects: Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
The results showed different passing rates between the disciplines: over 21 thousand passed in Biology, more than 24 thousand in Chemistry and around 11 thousand in Physics. Overall, only a minority of students were able to pass all three required exams.
How publishing works
University Minister Anna Maria Bernini defined the procedures with ministerial decree of 22 December 2025. The ranking will be accessible from 4pm on the afternoon of 8 January in the personal area of the CINECA Universitaly portal.
The rankings are organized into nine distinct sections for each single-cycle master’s degree course: Medicine and Surgery, Dentistry and Dental Prosthetics, Veterinary Medicine. The order of placement depends on the overall score obtained in the tests taken.
In the new decree the Ministry changes its pace on the filter semester: no outright failures after the first exams, but a ranking system that allows you to stay in the game even with partial results. Students who obtain at least 18/30 in one or more exams can enter the ranking, recover the missing credits and still access the second semester, if in a suitable position. The declared objective is to avoid empty places after the increase in access and make the route less rigid, without lowering the bar of merit, but introducing a second concrete possibility for those who stumble on the first attempt
Registration deadlines
Students placed in the first bracket will have time from the day of publication until January 14th to complete their registration at the assigned location. By January 15th, each university will communicate the list of actual members to the CINECA portal.
A second phase of assignments will start on January 16 and will concern the places left free after the first round. Students who, despite having passed the tests, have not obtained a sufficient score for the locations indicated in their preferences will be able to access but can enroll in universities with remaining availability. Registration for this phase will be open from January 21st to 24th.
A third phase is also planned from January 28th to manage any places still available, intended for requests to change location for serious reasons or for enrollments in years subsequent to the first.
The complaints about the system
The legal network Consulcesi & Partners has announced appeals to the TAR, arguing that the filter semester reproduces and amplifies the negative effects of the previous limited number. The lawyers dispute several critical issues of the process: effective duration reduced to just over a month and a half, non-uniform methods of implementation between universities, alleged violations of anonymity and irregularities in the tests.
According to the lawyers following the appeals, the level of difficulty of the November and December exams was excessive compared to the expected standards, and the conditions were not homogeneous for all participants. The regulatory changes made during the course of the course would represent a further element of dispute for those who do not obtain admission.
