In the new investigation by Altroconsumo the data that weighs more than all the others concerns the 5Gcapable this year of exceed 40% of the overall tests for the first time. And much of the turnaround in the rankings is based on that number.
Vodafone still first, WindTre overtakes Tim
The monitoring, conducted through the CheBanda app between July 2025 and June 2026 with the participation of over 9 thousand users, confirms Vodafone in first place among the five main Italian operators, with 89,355 points overall, and Fastweb maintaining second position. The real news concerns the third placewith WindThree able to make a clear leap compared to last year’s survey and bypass Timthus conquering the third step of the podium. Iliad closes the rankingdetached from the rest of the group.
5G behind WindTre’s comeback
This is precisely what explains WindTre’s comeback diffusion of 5G. The general ranking, in fact, weighs the results of each operator based on how many tests its customers carry out in both 4G and 5G, and since the scores are much higher on the fifth generation network, whoever brings more users to 5G climbs positions. This year, 52% of WindTre user tests took place on this network: the highest share among all operators, a record that in 2025 belonged to Fastweb.
How much does 5G now have on network quality
The general picture tells a story ever wider diffusion of the fifth generation: if a year ago 5G tests stopped at around 30% of the total, today they reach 43%, thanks to the greater availability of compatible smartphones and wider coverage across the territory. And the leap in quality, when there is 5G, can be seen: according to the survey, for download all operators obtain scores that are well over double those recorded in 4G.
The scores divided by 4G and 5G
Breaking down the ranking by individual technology, some surprises emerge. Vodafone remains the best in both 4G and 5G. But on the fourth generation network, unlike what happened in 2025, Fastweb overtakes Tim, with 26,919 points against 24,792. On 5G the hierarchy is reversed: here Tim maintains an advantage, albeit minimal, over Fastweb, with 74,534 points against 72,353.
How Altroconsumo monitoring works
The tests measure four parameters: file download and upload speed, video playback quality (startup time and any interruptions) e browsing speed on a basket of websites. For each operator, only the five main Italian operators are considered, the only ones for which Altroconsumo has a sufficiently large test sample to guarantee a statistically reliable evaluation.
