The washing machine is an appliance that is almost never missing in homes. Although it is indispensable for frequent laundry, not everyone regularly dedicates themselves to cleaning it, from the filter to the tub.

In a vortex of copy and paste, articles are bouncing around the internet about a prodigious “sponge trick” to eliminate traces of mold in the tray which, in reality, is anything but a trick. In these contents, in the end, the click-catcher title is far from their content: in fact, it is recommended to clean the tray using a kitchen sponge. That’s all (but wow?!?).

To avoid the proliferation of bacteria, the formation of mold and bad odors, there are tricks and tips that really deserve to be called such, not only because they are effective, but because they will help you keep the entire washing machine sanitized, including the tub.

Here are some that will come in handy in your daily life:

The simplest gesture to prevent mold and bad odors is to leave both the door and the detergent drawer slightly open after each wash, so as to encourage the evaporation of residual humidity. It is equally important to immediately remove the laundry from the drum and dry the door seal when necessary, especially in the creases where water, lint and detergent residues tend to accumulate.

Periodically, then, it is a good idea to also clean the filter and start the appropriate basket cleaning cycle, if provided for by the model. Before using citric acid, percarbonate or other maintenance products, it is always advisable to check the manufacturer’s instructions, because materials and components can react differently to the various treatments.
