More bears that go towards urban centers, but who is the fault (and what to do)?

In a constantly change nature, even wildlife is forced to adapt and adapt its trends to procure food. The research can continue outside the habitat up to the inhabited centers close to the naturalistic areas, where the sightings of wild specimens are sometimes usual.

This is also the case for the brown bears, large plantigrads distributed between the Alps and the central Apennines. Their presence near the urban areas has been documented several times in the municipalities that fall in the territory of the Abruzzo Lazio and Molise National Park. However, the reason for attending does not seem to be clear to everyone.

In fact, there was talk, in a worrying way, of “lack of resources in nature”, a reason that would have pushed the bears to seek the most disparate sources of food close to homes. But will it really be so? First of all, a concept must be clarified.

The feeding of the bear is very varied from season per season depending on its energy needs. Despite the animal is included in the report of the fauna service of the autonomous province of Trento “large carnivores”, the bear is not labeled as a carnivorous.

Its diet is omnivorous and is mainly made up of fruits, dried fruit such as acorns, gems and leaves, insects and minimally from ungulates. Last but not least, the bear is also an animal with opportunistic behavior. This means that discovered of food “at hand” will tend to return to that place.

More than lack of resources, therefore, we speak of easy food, sometimes voluntarily left to wild animals. It is not surprising, therefore, that some bears rather than others have become a constant presence in small countries.

So it happened, for example, at the Orsa Petra in the municipality of Lecce in the Marsi. Here, not only bowls around, but also staff of the staff of the garden on the fences of the gardens were found. If this is not for bears an invitation to ban and approach then we don’t know how to tell you what it is.

It is obvious that, beyond the stories and the (very wrong) desire to want to help wild fauna, the cause and the solution to this dynamic lies in our way of behaving.

The citizens complain of the presence of the bear in the village and at the same time there are the streets, where Petra usually passes, full of bowls with food waste. Coesistence is not a game but a way to demonstrate civilization and culture of the conservation of our precious territory “wrote the Abruzzo Lazio and Molise National Park.

For this reason, it is essential to follow the recommendations provided by the park technicians in nature, adopt the measures highlighted by experts such as bear -proof bins in the municipalities concerned or promote information campaigns.

These are interventions that should be implemented on each floor and each of us to help coexist correctly and in the right balance with wild species. Having bears that bud in the inhabited centers should not be part of normality because it means endangering the safety of animals and citizens. We reflect on the consequences of our actions. This is certainly not the way to protect wildlife.
