New food recall, this time in the organic products circuit. The NaturaSì chain has issued a precautionary recall of a batch of organic hulled millet under its own brand due to the presence of some toxic substances in quantities exceeding the limits permitted by European legislation.
Full details of the recalled product
The recall concerns packs of 500 grams of NaturaSì organic hulled millet, identified by the batch number 533451751 and with a minimum shelf life (TMC) of 12/24/2026.
The product was created by the company BF Agro-Industriale Srl for EcorNaturaSì SpA. The production plant is located in via delle Bonifiche Ferraresi 13/G, in Jolanda di Savoia (Ferrara).
According to what is indicated in the official notice, the recall was activated due to chemical risk, following the exceeding of the limits set by EU Regulation 915/2023, which establishes the maximum permitted levels of certain contaminants in foods. In this case it was the tropane alkaloids.
What are tropane alkaloids
Tropane alkaloids are natural substances produced by some weeds, such as nightshade, jimsonweed and henbane, which can accidentally contaminate cereals during the harvesting phase. Among the best known are atropine and scopolamine, compounds that act on the nervous system.
Although dietary exposure is generally low, high quantities can cause side effects, such as dry mouth, gastrointestinal disorders, tachycardia and, in severe cases, neurological symptoms. For this reason the European Union has set very stringent limits, especially for cereal-based foods.
What consumers who have millet at home should do
As a precaution, NaturaSì recommends not consuming the organic hulled millet belonging to the indicated lot. Anyone who has purchased the product can return it to the NaturaSì point of sale, where it will be possible to obtain a replacement or refund, even without presenting the receipt.
As always, the recall does not affect other lots or products in the same line.
