There has not been a legislative imposition, but only a slow and profound process of awareness politics, dialogue with companies, public campaigns and international efforts: so there Sweden makes history and, through constant and slow work of transition to the cage-freebecomes the First country in the world with no more chickens bred in a cage.
It was 1988 when the Swedish Parliament forbade the farm in the cage but, at the end of the ten -year transition period provided by law, the egg industry had not yet eliminated the cages. As a result, the law has been modified and the use of cages in egg production continued.
But since 2008, over 85 companies – from retailers to hotels and restaurants – have taken a position against eggs from farms in a caged following discussions between Project 1882, the main organization for the protection of animals raised for food purposes in Sweden.
These corporate commitments played a crucial role in the progressive elimination of cages from the production of eggs in Sweden.
And today the numbers speak clearly: Since 2008, more than 17 million hens has been spared a life behind bars.
Sweden shows us that a world without cages is possible. This extraordinary result, obtained without a ban on the law but thanks to a tireless work of public pressure and corporate change, reminds us that the power of change is in our hands – conclude from Animal Equality, which has been documenting the negative effects of the breeding in a cage for years at the expense of hens, sow, rabbits, ducks and millions of animals exploited every day inside the food industry.
Also in Italy, we will continue to fight every day until no animal is more forced to live prisoner. The cages must become a distant memory, everywhere ”declares Matteo Cupi, an animal Equality Italy executive director.
