Europe is preparing to face a new phase of intense heat due to the strengthening of a large subtropical high pressure field set to affect much of western and central Europe in the coming days. According to meteorological calculations, the phenomenon will favor particularly high temperatures in several European countries, with effects that will also be felt in Italy.
In Europe
The most extreme conditions are expected between Portugal, Spain and France, where temperatures could reach and locally exceed 40 degrees in inland areas. The anticyclone will then tend to extend towards the rest of the continent, progressively also involving Germany and the Alpine area.
Italy
Italy will be less directly affected by the warmer air mass, but will still have to deal with a sharp increase in temperatures. During the week, highs will return widely above 30 degrees, with peaks between 35 and 38 degrees especially in the Po Valley and in the internal areas of the centre.
The southern regions, however, will continue to feel the influence of relatively cooler currents coming from the Balkans. This configuration could favor the development of afternoon thunderstorms along the Apennine ridge, in particular between Calabria, Basilicata and internal areas of Campania.
However, the general picture remains dominated by atmospheric stability and the progressive strengthening of the heat. According to experts, the most intense phase could occur in the second part of the month, when a portion of the vast “heat dome” present over Western Europe could extend more decisively towards Italy.
In the meantime, the Ministry of Health invites you to follow the bulletins on heat waves, active for 27 Italian cities, and to pay particular attention to the most vulnerable people, such as the elderly, children and people with chronic pathologies. In fact, forecasts indicate the return of temperatures higher than seasonal averages and conditions favorable to an increase in physical discomfort due to heat and sultriness.
