Tons and tons of empty valves in what is a real epacombe. For days, the fishermen of the Emilian-Romagna coast have been struggling with a truly worrying phenomenon: the disappearance of clams from the sea.
In their networks only empty shells to indicate a real death, also reported by the Coldiretti fishing section.
It is a very serious situation, urgent support measures are needed, local operators have made it known.
But why are the clams by dying?
While waiting for the results of Arpae’s analyzes, the Agency for the prevention of the environment and energy of Emilia Romagna, it is believed that the most probable hypothesis is that of the large amount of fresh water that has poured into the Adriatic Sea in the days of heavy rains, which would literally suffocate the population of molluscs.
A phenomenon that concerned the whole Adriatic: a hallcycchi death has occurred in Goro, which has environmental consequences in the area.
A new blow: the grip of the blue crab
There seems to be no respite for Italian aquaculture. After the arrival of the Blue crab, alien species now out of control, the production of mussels and clams-beating heart of the center-north chain-continues to Franare. These invasive crustaceans no longer limit themselves to devouring molluscs, but have also started to hit some fish species such as muggini, further compromising the balance of lagoon ecosystems.
The data are clear: as early as 2023 in Veneto and Emilia-Romagna the clams of clams have practically disappeared. Only fishing turned off, however, this year he returns little more than empty shells, intended for disposal.
The problem is that clams have slow cycles: they almost need Two years to reach the minimum size allowed by law. This means that the damage does not stop to date, but they risk projecting themselves in the long term, opening dramatic scenarios for a supply chain that was already under pressure due to the climatic crisis and pollution.
The disappearance of clams is therefore not only a economic disaster: it is a strong signal of how the arrival of alien species and the climatic crisis can irreversibly alter the natural balance, with direct repercussions on the life of coastal communities and on our tables.
