Nutella Vegan: A year ago it arrived in supermarkets, but what it contains instead of milk. And is it lighter?

The launch of 2024

On September 3, 2024 Ferrero officially launched the Nutella Plant-Based, the first milk without milk of the most famous spreadable cream in the world. With the green cap and the renewed label, the new product arrived on the shelves of all Italian supermarkets and immediately attracted the attention of those who followed a vegan diet or was lactose intolerant.

The recipe without milk

The novelty was in the absence of skimmed milk powder, replaced by chickpeas and rice syrup. For the rest, sugar, palm oil, cocoa and hazelnuts remained protagonists. At the launch, the 350 gram jar cost 4.49 euros and there was already talk of a distribution of distribution.

The first reactions

On social media, the first tastings confirmed that the cream convinced, even if the taste was not identical to the original. For many it was promoted, for others only a “green copy” of the classic Nutella remained.

The comparison with the traditional version

Today, the debate moves beyond the simple “I like/I don’t like it”: is the vegan nutella really lighter and less sweet than the classic version? Just look at the labels to understand it.

Sugars and calories compared

The nutritional table speaks clearly: the Vegan Nutella contains 45.4 grams of sugars per 100 grams of product, against the 56.3 of the classic Nutella. A difference that at first sight seems significant, but that does not change the general picture.

On a caloric level, the two creams are almost identical and, surprisingly, the vegan version even has a slightly higher quantity of fat.

It is lighter

nutella vegan sweet

In essence, the vegan Nutella is no longer “light” or less sweet. Those who hoped to indulge in this Plant-Based version to feel less guilty will be disappointed: from a nutritional point of view, the two creams are equivalent almost entirely.

In short, the choice remains above all ethical or linked to intolerances, rather than a real health difference.
