Ten years after the famous animated film, Disney brings it to the big screen Oceania in live-action version, ready to rewrite the legend of Vaiana and the demigod Maui with spectacular visual effects and breathtaking sets. The young Catherine Lagaʻaia plays Moana, while Dwayne Johnson returns to give life to Maui, ensuring continuity with the iconic soul of the original film where he voiced Maui.
The plot: Vaiana beyond the coral reef
The film which will be released in Italian cinemas on 19 August 2026 follows Vaiana as she answers the call of the Ocean, embarking on a journey that takes her beyond the coral reef of her island, Motunui. Next to her is Maui, an adventure companion and demigod with overwhelming charisma. The narrative combines Polynesian mythology, courage and family bonds, transforming the story into an epic adventure capable of conquering adults and children.
A careful and spectacular production
Behind the camera is Thomas Kail, winner of Emmy and Tony Awards, while the project is produced by Johnson himself together with Beau Flynn, Hiram Garcia and Lin-Manuel Miranda. The soundtrack, entrusted to Mark Mancina and Lin-Manuel Miranda, together with original songs by Opetaia Foaʻi, helps to create an overwhelming musical rhythm that accompanies the visual magic of the film.
Cultural loyalty to Polynesian roots
The official Italian trailer reveals an extraordinarily realistic Polynesian world: vibrant oceans, mythological creatures and spectacular settings recreate the atmosphere of the original film with a more realistic approach. The production worked closely with experts to ensure cultural fidelity and do justice to the tale’s Polynesian roots. The challenge will be to transform the animated classic into a great cinematic experience, combining myth, adventure and technology, in a film capable of exciting both those who loved the original and new generations of spectators.
