On the day of love I’ll take you to Gradara, the medieval village scene of the most romantic story of the Divine Comedy

Gradara, one of the most fascinating medieval villages in the Marche, is perfect for a trip out of town, especially on the occasion of Valentine’s Day. Located a few kilometers from Rimini, the village is known not only for its imposing walls and Castle, but also for the tragic love story of Paolo and Francesca, made immortal by Dante Alighieri in Divine Comedy.

As soon as we arrived, the panoramic view of the sea of the Romagna Riviera and the Marche hinterland immediately caught my attention. The cobbled streets, artisan shops and taverns create an authentically medieval atmosphere. Gradara is in fact surrounded by a double wall, which still today allows you to walk along part of the patrol walkways to admire the view and breathe in the history of the village.

The visit to the Castle and the legend of Paolo and Francesca

The heart of the visit is Gradara Castle, built around the 12th century and belonging to the Malatesta family, who reigned there for centuries. Here, according to legend, the tragic love between Francesca da Polenta and Paolo Malatesta took place. Francesca, betrothed to her brother Gianciotto, was deceived and believed she was marrying Paolo, the handsome man of the family. Only when she woke up did she understand the deception and, despite her initial desperation, she fell in love with Paolo. Their clandestine relationship ended tragically when Gianciotto discovered and killed them.

Dante tells the story thus in the V Canto of Hell:

Love, who forgives no one loved to love, took such pleasure in me so strongly that, as you see, it still does not abandon me. Love led us to a death: Caina awaits the one who extinguished us for life…

Visiting the castle allows you to still see the trapdoor from which Paolo tried to escape, in vain, and the richly furnished rooms, which evoke the atmosphere of the 13th century.

The ideal itinerary to visit Gradara

During the visit I followed an itinerary that I recommend to those who want to combine history and legend: we start from the historic village, walking through alleys and medieval houses. Then we went up to the castle with entrance through the main arch and followed the route of the patrol walkways, which offers a unique perspective on the surrounding countryside. Finally, we can only conclude with a visit to the Historical Museum in Piazza V Novembre, where artefacts from medieval life, weapons and instruments of torture are exhibited, as well as reconstructions of peasant life. Don’t miss the castle gardens and the Church of San Giovanni Battista, dating back to the 13th century, with decorated interiors that testify to the spirituality of the time.

Gradara as a romantic destination

Gradara is ideal for a romantic trip, thanks to its medieval atmosphere and the legend of Paolo and Francesca. Walking among walls, towers and cobbled alleys gives emotions that go beyond time and that make a day dedicated to love special. Numerous events throughout the year, such as the Castle Siege and the Magic Castle Festival, further enrich the visit, making it a complete experience of history, culture and legend.

Practical advice for the visit

The village is easily reachable by car from Rimini or Pesaro. The ticket for the castle includes access to the walkways and the Historical Museum. For those who want a complete experience, it is advisable to book a guided tour, which allows you to delve deeper into the history of the Malatestas and the legend of Paolo and Francesca. Finally, for the most romantic, the perfect treat is a walk at sunset on the castle walls which offers a breathtaking view and a memorable experience. Gradara is much more than a simple medieval village: it is a place where history, art and legend meet, capable of transporting you on a journey through time between passions, betrayals and suggestive panoramas.
