Altroconsumo has published a new update of the investigation conducted on industrial snacks, taking into consideration over 250 references among those that are usually found in Italian supermarkets and discouns. The analysis included Croissants, croissants, tarts, muffins, plumcakes, donuts and rolls, a very varied range capable of intercepting each palate. The final picture, however, is not encouraging: on the nutritional front no snack can be considered truly balanced.
The packaged desserts certainly represent a quick and practical solution, perfect for a quick breakfast or a break during the day. Yet practicality must not make the critical sides forget: sugars, fats, calories and transformation level must always be observed carefully. It is precisely in these aspects that the major limits emerge, since large retailers do not offer truly healthy proposals.
Altroconsumo, while noting these limits, has drawn up a comparison and identified the products that obtain higher scores. The ranking does not reward truly healthy snacks, but allows at least to distinguish the less problems. Here are the top ten positions, which offer some possible choice, even with due caution.
The ranking of snacks
According to the last test by Altroconsumo, only two products reached the “acceptable” range, between 40 and 59 points. The ranking of the best ten snacks is as follows:
The response confirms what has already emerged in the past: the packaged snacks should be rarely consumed. The healthiest choice remains to prepare homemade desserts, in order to control the amount of sugar and privilege fresh and seasonal ingredients.
How the test was carried out
The investigation of Altroconsumo was based on an independent analysis of the ingredients and nutritional data shown on the label. The criteria used for the evaluation were five:
Each product obtained a score between 0 and 100, with classification in five bands: very good (80-100), good (60-79), acceptable (40-59), scarce (20-39) and very scarce (0-19). As previously mentioned, no snacks in the September 2025 edition has reached the “voucher” threshold, but only that of “acceptable” for the two subsequent products.
