Paralympics Milan-Cortina: two curling stones stolen, hunt is on for the perpetrators of the vile theft

The Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Paralympics begin in the worst possible way, after the many, many controversies that already accompany them. In the Pearl of the Dolomites facility, where the first matches of the Paralympic mixed doubles curling tournament have already begun, two granite stones were stolen, each with an estimated value of around 750-800 euros.

The theft was promptly reported to the State Police, who began investigations to trace those responsible. Although the economic damage is not devastating, the greatest concern is linked to the conduct of the matches, given that the stolen stones were in use in preliminary competitions and had already been part of the Olympic mixed doubles tournament.

The matches are safe with the reserve stones

The organizers immediately found a solution: the reserve stones have been adapted to the same technical specifications as the stolen ones and will immediately replace the stolen granite. Thus, the competition calendar will not undergo changes and athletes will be able to continue to compete regularly, without risking delays or cancellations.

According to initial reconstructions, the missing stones were discovered during a routine check last Monday. The authorities are now trying to clarify the dynamics and responsibility of the theft, but the tournament continues amid tension and disbelief.

A problematic debut

As mentioned, the theft comes at an already delicate moment, given that the Paralympics have been accompanied in recent weeks by organizational controversies and logistical concerns. Despite this, the Paralympic tournament maintains its pace: the opening ceremony is scheduled for this evening at the Verona Arena, while Saturday will be the first day on which the medals will be awarded.

The six Paralympic sports on the program – alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, biathlon, snowboarding, ice hockey and wheelchair curling – will not be interrupted, but starting with a robbery leaves a bad taste in the mouth and casts a shadow over the festive atmosphere that should accompany the event. Controversy and small sabotages that should have no place in the spirit of the Paralympic Games, a symbol of resilience and sportsmanship.
