Paris-Roubaix 2026, the iconic goats mowing the grass on the cobblestones are back in action (in an ecological way)

Even before the champions, they are the ones taking center stage at Paris-Roubaix 2026: a small herd of goats busy “cleaning up” the cobblestones of the legendary Arenberg Forest. An unusual presence but one that has now become a modern ritual of the Queen of the Classics. The animals graze on the grass that has grown between the pebbles, clearing the bottom and making the path less slippery. A simple, natural and surprisingly effective solution, adopted in recent years after the pandemic period and which has now become an integral part of race preparation.

The Trouée d’Arenberg stretch, approximately 2.3 kilometers long, is one of the most feared by runners: irregular stones, continuous vibrations and the risk of falls. Grass growing between cobblestone blocks can turn into a trap. And this is where the “ecological sentinels” come into play, capable of doing in a few weeks what would require invasive mechanical interventions.

A symbolic gesture for a legendary race

The 123rd edition of the race will start on Sunday 12 April from Compiègne for a total of 258.3 kilometres, with 30 cobbled sectors and over 54 kilometers on stones. Among the key points remain the Trouée d’Arenberg, Mons-en-Pévèle and Carrefour de l’Arbre, five-star stretches that often decide the winner. But before the show, the natural maintenance entrusted to the goats represents a symbolic moment: a silent anticipation of the hell of the North.

Organizers use this method to improve the readability of the surface, reduce the risk of slips and preserve the historical integrity of the pavé. No herbicides, no heavy vehicles: only animals at work, in perfect balance with the territory and totally ecological. The goats thus become the symbol of a transformation: they demonstrate that even one of the toughest and most historic competitions in cycling can adopt environmentally friendly choices without giving up tradition.

An ecological method to protect historic pavé

This method also allows us to protect the historic pavé, avoiding aggressive interventions that could damage the centenary stones. The discovery of this method occurred thanks to the “Friends of Paris-Roubaix”, a group of volunteers who are dedicated to keeping the cobbled sections of the race in excellent condition.

Slow but effective maintenance, perfectly in line with the spirit of the race. Thus, while the champions prepare for the battle on the stones, the silent work of the goats tells a different story: that of an iconic race that looks ahead, where nature, safety and innovation meet even before the first pedal stroke.

Attention to sustainability

The initiative is part of a broader approach to environmental sustainability. Paris-Roubaix, a global event followed in over 190 countries, is reducing the impact of the race through natural solutions, waste reduction, use of reusable materials and respect for waste disposal areas during the race. The use of low-emission vehicles and more efficient management of resources is also encouraged to reduce the impact of the event along the entire route.

Historic news: women and men on the same day

Finally there is another positive note which increases the prestige of this race even further. For the first time, the Paris-Roubaix Femmes will take place on the same day as the men’s race. The athletes will start from Denain for 143.1 kilometres, tackling 33.7 kilometers of pavé, including 17 sectors of the men’s final. A strong signal for international cycling, which combines tradition and future in the same event.
