Birthstones are gems linked to certain months of the year with specific properties and characteristics. Particular powers are attributed to them and it is believed that wearing the right one brings good luck.
In ancient times these stones were associated with the signs of the zodiac and it was believed that each of them was able to offer the wearer special powers during the corresponding astrological period. Instead, the association between gems and months of the year dates back to the period between the 16th and 18th centuries, and according to what the International Gem Society reports, the list of traditional stones originated in Poland. Only in 1912 did the National Association of Jewelers of the United States publish a list of modern birthstones. What’s the difference?
