In the Philippines there is a real humanitarian and environmental emergency: after the 224 deaths due to the typhoon Kalmaegithe super typhoon Fung-wongnow called Uwanentered the country yesterday 8 November and the government responded by evacuating around a million people, already on their knees due to the disaster of recent days.
As reported by Manila TimesFriday, November 7 ‘Fung-Wong’ was already a severe tropical storm, intensifying as it moved northwestward over the Pacific Ocean, but was still outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported that the Fung-Wong was estimated to be 1,500 kilometers east of Northeastern Mindanao or 1,470 km east of Eastern Visayas, with maximum sustained winds of 95 km/h near the center and gusts of up to 115 km/h.
Unfortunately, the situation then changed in the following hours: yesterday 8 November the typhoon, later renamed ‘Uwan‘, entered the country’s PAR, further strengthening it, and today, November 9, eight provinces were placed under Signal No. 5 (emergency) with the typhoon hitting Luzonin particular New Ecija (northeastern portion), the southern part of Quirinothe south-eastern one of New Vizcayathe central of Aurorathe Polillo Islandsthe northern of Camarines Nortethe northern and eastern areas of Camarines Sur and the northern of Catanduanes.
Other provinces are under signal 4 (just below the “true” emergency) and unfortunately the news from the local meteorological service is not good at all.

All this happens – among other things – shortly after the protests of the population against the climate crisis which is hitting ever harder: tens of thousands of citizens took to the streets of the capital Manila and numerous other cities, giving rise to a popular movement that many analysts consider the largest in the last ten years in the Asian country.
The culmination occurred on September 21st with the ‘Trillion Peso March‘, a march in which over 100 thousand people joined to denounce the opaque management of public funds and the scandal of the so-called ghost projects for flood control (which were supposed to protect the population from torrential rains and monsoons).
Meanwhile, a million people have been evacuated and the situation is truly tragic.
