Airports of Rome (ADR) has inaugurated the Solar Farm in Fiumicino, an imposing photovoltaic infrastructure will contribute to reducing the CO₂ emissions of the airport of over 11,000 tons every year.
With 55,000 monochristalline silicon panels distributed on an area of 2.5 km, this installation is the largest of its kind in Europe and one of the most extensive in the world.
Key data from Solar Farm
Solar Farm has an initial capacity of 22 MWP, sufficient to generate over 30 million kWh per year. This production will allow you to reduce 11,000 tons of CO2 per year, contributing significantly to the Net Zero Carbon goal by 2030, 20 years earlier than the sector targets. In the next five years, the project provides for an expansion of capacity of up to 60 MWP, making the system capable of satisfying the annual energy needs of 30,000 Italian families or feeding one million electric vehicles.
An investment for the future
The project, developed by Adr in collaboration with Enel and Cirett, was carried out with an investment of around 50 million euros. It is part of a larger plan of over 200 million euros intended for interventions for the generation of renewable energy and sustainable mobility. This initiative not only reduces dependence on fossil sources, but also strengthens the energy independence of the airport, mitigating the volatil of energy markets.
Italian leadership in airport sustainability
The inauguration of the Solar Farm confirms the leadership of ADR, the Mundys group company, in the creation of strategic infrastructures integrated in compliance with the environment.
The launch of the new Solar Farm consolidates our commitment in the Green transition and in the decarbonisation with a unique infrastructure of its kind throughout the international airport panorama. The energy independence guaranteed by this new planning to our 5 -star airport will allow you to drastically reduce the environmental impact of our activities according to the model of sustainable development that we have been building for years now and which represents the first, true pre -packaging for the growth of stopover, of the territory and the town
Marco Troncone, CEO of Aeroporti di Roma said.
A model for the future
The infrastructure is a fundamental piece of Mundys’s ESG strategy, with objectives certified by the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTI) to contain global warming within 1.5 ° C. These are the most ambitious target provided for by the SBTI protocol, adopted today by a few active groups in the airport sector and to reach which works such as the photovoltaic system inaugurated today are fundamental. In addition to reducing the use of fossil sources for the energy needs of airport activities, the new work will also allow to increase energy independence and resilience with respect to the volatility of the markets.
