Phrases, images and gifs for Mother’s Day 2026: the most beautiful to share

The second Sunday of May is not a date chosen by chance (this year it falls on May 10th). The tradition has its roots in post-World War II America, although its modern origin dates back to 1908, when Anna Jarvis organized the first celebration in memory of her mother in West Virginia. The date was chosen because it was close to the anniversary of the woman’s disappearance, then in 1914 President Wilson made it a national holiday.

In Italy the path was different: in the 1950s two independent initiatives came to life, one in Tordibetto di Assisi with a strong religious connotation linked to the Marian month, the other in Liguria also driven by the floriculture sector. Since 1959 the anniversary spread throughout the country, first set on May 8th, then moved, in 2001, to the second Sunday of the month.

Today the holiday is celebrated with messages, phone calls, family lunches and increasingly often with an image or gif to send on WhatsApp. Here are some phrases to use or simply take inspiration from, accompanied by images and animated GIFs.
