During Christmas many homes are filled with seasonal plants but the poinsettia remains one of the most loved thanks to its intense red foliage. Although it is often considered a difficult plant, it can actually remain beautiful and healthy until the new year with a little targeted attention.
The location
Location is key. The poinsettia needs a lot of light but must never be exposed to direct sun which risks burning the leaves. The ideal is a bright spot in the house where it can receive at least six hours of indirect light a day. Being a tropical plant, it suffers from cold and drafts so it should be kept away from open windows and drafts.
The water
Water must be dosed carefully. The soil must be watered only when it feels dry to the touch, avoiding stagnation which can cause the roots to rot. The pot must have good drainage. The humid environment is another important ally, especially in winter when heating tends to dry the air. Lightly misting the leaves helps keep them healthy.
The fertilizer
To keep it vigorous over time it is also useful to feed it. Monthly fertilization with liquid fertilizer for houseplants helps the poinsettia stay strong and decorative longer.
With correct light, well-dosed water and a minimum of nourishment, this plant can easily survive the holidays and continue to give color to the house even after New Year’s Eve. No miracles, just good habits done consistently.
