March is like that old friend who gives you a pat on the shoulder and says to you: “It’s time to get back in motion!”. After months of cold and grayness, the lawn may appear a little tired and present yellowish grass wires, goals and the usual musk, always ready to make room, like an unwanted guest.
Therefore, before spring arrives, it will be necessary to put yourself at work right now, in March, when the sun begins to peep to a greater frequency.
Do you want to improve the situation of your lawn and arouse the envy of the neighborhood? There is no problem: just perform the interventions that we will see soon.
Clean the lawn: let it breathe
After winter, the lawn needs to take a breath of air. And the first step is simple: free it from the leaves, the twigs and the debris. Take a rake – yes, just the one abandoned in the garage – and begins to collect everything that obstructs the surface. Cleaning operations improve both the aesthetic and practical aspects, given that by removing the residues, you will allow the grass to “breathe” and the light to penetrate, stimulating healthy growth.
In addition, with the rake you can detach the dead parts and remove the moss. If you already feel like a gardening hero, know that you have just completed the first mission.
First cut: not too short!
Mow the grass in March? Depends. In the event that the climate is already mild and the grass has started to grow, you can proceed with the first cut. But careful not to overdo it: the lawn is still trying to recover from winter. The optimal cutting height? Three or four centimeters, because with shorter cuts it would risk weakening the grass and opening the doors to weeds.
If, on the other hand, March should present a still rather rigid climate, you will have to postpone the operation. A late cut always better than a stressed lawn!
Fertilization: an energy breakfast for the lawn
After months of lethargy, grass also needs energy. March is the perfect month to fertilize and feed the lawn. You can opt for an organic fertilizer, better if labeled for spring use, or distribute finely crumbled compost. The trick? Contemplate before a downpour: water will help nutrients to penetrate the ground. If the weather does not collaborate, you will have to arm yourself with patience and water abundantly.
And I recommend: after fertilization, wait at least a couple of weeks to mow the lawn, so that it can assimilate everything you need to grow strong and healthy.
Repair the calve areas: rebirth mission
Have you noticed some hidden areas? Don’t panic. Riseminina is the solution. March is the right time to intervene, taking advantage of the milder temperatures. But watch out: if the ground is still too cold (below 10 ° C), the seeds will not die.
Once sown, don’t fertilize immediately. Wait for the new shoots to be well developed. It is a bit like placing, metaphorically, the seed of hope and wait patiently that it slides.
Lime on the lawn: a chemical touch, but only if needed
The acid soil can curb the growth of the lawn. Here the lime comes into play, useful for regulating the pH and improving the absorption of nutrients. But be careful: the lime should not be applied to random. Before proceeding, check if the ground really needs it. You can find PH analysis kit in gardening stores. Remember that applying lime unnecessarily means preparing fertile ground for weeds. And we certainly don’t want to make them feel at home, right?
Scarification: a job for April
If you thought you had to go immediately to scarification, stop. This practice – fundamental to remove musk and felt – should be performed in April, after the lawn has passed the first growth phase and has already undergone at least a couple of cuts. Immediately after the scarification, you may have to proceed with a new sowing. For now, enjoy the work done in March.
Other work in the garden to be carried out in March: why stop at the lawn?
If the desire for gardening is truly irrepressible, March offers other opportunities. You can plant wild garlic, grow dalia plants in pots, or sow carrots. If you have a green thumb, try to pregem the potatoes, or you could try to plant lettuce and tomatoes. And, if you want to do something useful for the environment, choose those friendly plants of the bees, such as calendula and sunflower.
March, the month of green rebirth
March is the month in which the foundations are laid for a healthy and luxuriant lawn, which if worked carefully will become the undisputed protagonist of the summer.
Remember: Remove the debris, cut the grass carefully, fertilize at the right time and repair the calve areas. With a little patience, care and some precaution, your lawn will be ready to show off its best green.
