A new investigation by Lav rekindles the spotlight on a reality too often ignored: that of the dogs used in hunting. For months, the association’s cameras have documented the living conditions of these animals, locked up in dilapidated locks, immersed in dirt and deprived of any form of freedom. They are freed only during the hunting season, to be used as work tools at the service of hunters.
During the rest of the year, however, they remain closed for months, without the possibility of running, playing or simply living a dignified life. These practices represent a form of systematic abuse, often tolerated by the authorities since they are “Serie B dogs”, born with a single purpose: to serve.
An investigation that reveals normalized cruelty
The images collected by the Association show undernoying, sick and frightened animals, often forced to share tiny spaces between excrement and decomposition food. Many are abandoned or even killed when they are no longer useful. A cruelty that, according to Lav, is the direct consequence of a practice that no longer has any ethical or social justification: hunting.
It is not the first time that the association intervenes to save these dogs. During the fires in Sardinia in 2021 and the floods in Tuscany in 2023, the Lav emergency unit rescued dozens of animals trapped in the Serragli. A clear sign of how little value is attributed to their lives.
A battle that reaches the Senate
On September 19, Lav delivered 53,000 signatures in the Senate to support a bill to abolish hunting in Italy, also supported by five other associations. The drawing will be discussed as opposed to the DDL promoted by Minister Lollobrigida, which instead plans to expand the huntable species and reduce protected areas.
To give voice to the video investigation is Dunia Rahwan, journalist, speaker of Radio deejay And the dog instructor, who tells with sensitivity about the pain and dignity denied to these animals and which recalls how to abolish hunting is not only an ecological choice, but a moral duty towards those who cannot defend themselves.
