Public spa in one of the most beautiful villages in Tuscany: the establishment that has been awaited for years will open in Bagno Vignoni

In the heart of the Val d’Orcia, among the hills of the Sienese countryside, there is a small village where thermal water has been the protagonist for centuries. It is Bagno Vignoni, a hamlet of San Quirico d’Orcia, one of the most evocative places in Tuscany, famous for its truly unusual square, where instead of the traditional paving there is a large rectangular pool of sixteenth-century origin, fed by hot water springs. A landscape that seems to have remained suspended in time, frequented since ancient times for the properties of its waters and today among the most popular destinations in the Val d’Orcia, a UNESCO heritage site.

Right here, where spa tourism is an integral part of the history and identity of the area, a reality that has been awaited for years is about to materialize: the new public spa in Bagno Vignoni is now close to opening. Here is the rendering:

Before opening it, however, one problem still needs to be solved, namely the water that will feed it. On Monday 2 November the Tuscan regional council approved the outline of a new agreement with the Municipality of San Quirico d’Orcia, of which the Val d’Orcia village is a fraction. The proposal was from the councilor for economy and tourism Leonardo Marras. The text replaces the one signed in 2024.

What the agreement provides

The Region’s contribution is growing and now covers three items. The first is the construction of the plant, the second its completion. The third is new and involves interventions to make it really work, including the end of the work on the system that brings the thermal water. For this part another 800 thousand euros arrive. Half are regional funds, from the extraordinary contribution provided for by regional law 12/2026, the other half comes from the Single National Tourism Fund 2026-2028 of the Ministry of Tourism. With this money, explained President Eugenio Giani, the Region puts in total more than 2.5 million euros, for a total investment of almost 3.4 million.

Who will manage the spa establishment

The declared objective is to make the structure ready and interesting for a private operator. Marras said that we need to “resolve the water issue, which is decisive for future management.” The mayor of San Quirico, Marco Bartoli, thanked Giani and Marras and defined the journey undertaken so far as “long and complex”. According to him, the work must now be finished and the management entrusted. The Region also says that the intervention will help make better use of thermal water, both for structures that are already operating and for those under construction.

The obligations of the Municipality

The Municipality must include the interventions in the three-year program of public works, send the projects to the Region and check how the works are progressing. We remind you that for ten years from the opening the plant cannot be sold or used for anything else, and that there is still no opening date in the Region’s press release.
