Record auction for Harry Potter: a rare first edition of the book “The Philosopher’s Stone” sold for 400 thousand dollars

A true gem of world literature has been auctioned in Dallas. During Heritage Auctions’ Rare Books Signature event, a rare hardcover book by Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone written by JK Rowling sold for an incredible $400,000. Published in 1997 by the publisher Bloomsbury in just 500 historical copies, the first edition of the book is positioned as the second highest price ever recorded for the title, remaining behind only the record of 471,000 dollars set by the same auction house in December 2021.

The work, housed in a precious personalized clamshell case made by Chelsea Bindery, has all the features loved by collectors: the cover illustration drawn by Thomas Taylor, the indication of the author’s name as “Joanne Rowling” on the copyright page, a misspelling of the word “Philosopher’s” on the back and the repetition of the expression “1 wand” twice in the list of school supplies on page 53.

The renewed interest in JK Rowling’s saga

The auction event coordinated by Joe Maddalena, executive vice president of the auction house, reached a total of over $2.158 million on 384 lots with the participation of 1,077 international bidders. As the executive himself pointed out, most of the original 500 copies were originally intended for public libraries, making purchasing opportunities incredibly rare. The extraordinary sale comes at a crucial moment for the franchise, which is preparing to return to television screens with the new HBO television series entitled Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stonewhose global debut is scheduled for Christmas 2026. The charm of the most famous boy wizard in the world thus continues to dominate the collective imagination, confirming the cultural and economic impact of a work born over two decades ago.
