Red weather alert in Sardinia and yellow in Sicily: schools and parks close

Eastern Sardinia faces today, Thursday 5 November, the most delicate day of this wave of instability. The Department of Civil Protection, in agreement with the Regions, has assessed red alert on the eastern sectors of the island and yellow on the rest of the territory. Code yellow also on part of Sicily.

A depression moving eastward

At the origin there is a depression structure over the western Mediterranean which, explains the warning of adverse weather conditions released yesterday, is moving towards the east. On the island it brings scattered to widespread rainfall, also in the form of showers and thunderstorms, more persistent on the eastern sectors and on the coasts. The Department expects heavy showers, gusts of wind, local hailstorms and frequent lightning.

The code red areas

The detail comes from criticality notice no. 308 of the decentralized functional center of regional civil protection, valid from 6pm yesterday to 11.59pm today. The red, i.e. high criticality due to hydrogeological risk, concerns the Flumendosa-Flumineddu and Gallura alert areas. In the same areas, orange also goes off for the hydrogeological risk linked to storms and yellow for the hydraulic risk. The other five areas (Iglesiente, Campidano, Montevecchio Pischinappiu, Tirso and Logudoro) remain yellow due to hydrogeological risk.

Yesterday orange on the island and yellow in Basilicata

Red doesn’t come out of the blue, so to speak. Already for Wednesday 4 November the national bulletin issued the day before had set the orange in the Flumendosa-Flumineddu basins and in Gallura, together with the yellow for hydrogeological risk in sectors of Basilicata, in the Basi-B, Basi-C and Basi-E2 alert areas. For today, however, Basilicata no longer appears among the regions on alert.

Schools closed and updates

In Olbia and Nuoro the mayors have closed schools, parks and cemeteries by order, and other municipalities are considering similar measures.

To find out if your territory is involved, the Department refers to the territorial structures, which manage local alert levels and prevention measures. In Sardinia they are the regional civil protection channels, in Basilicata those of the functional centre. The national picture is updated every day, and tomorrow’s bulletin could already tell another story.
