“Rediscovered his nephew 140”: irrepressible emotion for the grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo in struggle for the desaparecidos

A new history of identity returned: the humanitarian organization Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo He announced the discovery of the “nephew 140”, a man removed from birth during the Argentine military dictatorship. After decades of silence and research, he was finally able to meet his sister, who has never stopped looking for him.

To give the announcement, with great emotion, is Estela de Carlottohistorical president of the Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo: “Welcome, nephew 140!“.

It is the son of Graciela Romero And Raúl Metztwo of many desaparecidos Victims of the military regime that bloodied Argentina between 1976 and 1983

The man had been kidnapped at birthtorn from his biological parents while they were illegally detained. Like many other children born in illegal detention centershad grown under false identity by families related to the regime, unaware of his true origins.

According to the estimates of the abuelas, about 500 babies they were subtracted from the parents desaparecidos: a real systematic project of cancellation of identity. Most of these children were illegally adopted by members of the armed forces or by sympathizers of the regime, growing within contexts that often celebrated the same repressive apparatus responsible for the assassination of their true parents.

Each recovery is a victory against oblivion, but also a painful confirmation: military repression has not limited itself to suppressing political opponents, but has tried to break entire genealogies, erasing family continuity. The work of the Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo, which began in the middle of the dictatorship with rudimentary means and extreme courage, has become a today global example of struggle for memory, truth and justice.
