Renault revisits its legendary R17 in a neo-retro electric version

Renault continues to revisit its historical models and, after the success of previous projects, this year it is the turn of the legendary R17. This new version, created in collaboration with the designer Now Ïtore-proposes the iconic sports coupé of the 70s in a fully electric guise with a contemporary design.

The R17 restomod maintains many of the original features of the model launched in 1971, but integrates cutting-edge technological solutions. The car body, based on the original monocoque, has been widened by 17 cm to improve road holding and guarantee greater stability. The angular and aggressive lines of the exterior design have been taken up and revisited to give a more fluid and dynamic appearance, with modern touches evident, for example, in the front headlights, which now take the form of four rectangular modules with rounded corners.

The vehicle features a 270 HP fully electric motor, positioned at the rear, which offers remarkable performance. The car is equipped with a carbon fiber chassis which allows the overall weight to be kept at just 1,400 kg, thus ensuring high energy efficiency and excellent handling on the road.

The interior of the R17 restomod has been reinterpreted while maintaining key elements of the original model. The seats, redesigned around the “petal” structure typical of the R17, now feature new quality materials: a mix of Merino wool and light wool bouclé that recalls the world of contemporary interior design. Despite the modern revisions, the comfort and quality of the finish, which characterized the original, have remained unchanged.

The dashboard has been renewed with a central display that follows Renault’s current graphic language. Also behind the steering wheel are four small geometric screens, inspired by the analogue car dials of the 1970s, which combine tradition and technology.

Distinctive features of the Renault R17 restomod

This electric R17, in addition to maintaining the distinctive character of the sports coupé, shows off several advanced technical features. The car is equipped with redesigned wheels, which add a futuristic touch without losing the retro charm. The rear lights, now made up of a single strip, are another element that blends past and present. The bodywork was treated with a special “Galactic Brown” paint, an original color developed specifically for this prototype.

Although not destined for mass production, the electric R17 restomod is a tangible example of how iconic cars can be modernized without sacrificing their original spirit.

The Renault R17 restomod demonstrates how retro design can coexist with the latest technologies. The aerodynamic shapes and the electric motor transform this vehicle into a combination of elegance and power, faithful to the original model but with a touch of modernity that enhances its performance.

With this reinterpretation, the R17 remains a vehicle that combines the best of two eras, offering a ride that doesn’t compromise between style and functionality.
